UC Berkeley's Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies presents Berkeley Dance Project 2020 at 8 p.m. on Feb. 20–22 and Feb. 27–29 in The Playhouse at Zellerbach Hall. The dance concert features an all-student cast performing new works by Bay Area choreographers Erik Lee, Latanya d. Tigner and Lisa Wymore, as well as works created by students and dance groups at UC Berkeley.

After graduating from UC Berkeley in 2015, Elissa Lee began studying occupational therapy at USC, and researching chronic care management in medically underserved populations at the Lifestyle Redesign for Chronic Conditions lab. For her work, she was named a Student Innovator by the Gehr Family Center for Health Systems Science.

After student Drew Woodson took a playwriting course with Philip Gotanda, a professor in the Department of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies at Berkeley, he realized he had a story to tell. Two years later, that story would become his first play, Your Friend, Jay Silverheels. “The original idea for this play came out of this frustration I was having as an actor of not being able to find monologues that really fit and felt true to who I am as a Native person,” says Woodson.

Who Shot la Miguelito?, written and directed by Sean San José, who grew up in San Francisco’s Mission District and co-founded the theater company, Campo Santo, tells a story about the murder of a young street artist, la Miguelito, in the Mission District — a story that parallels the death of immigrant, working-class neighborhoods.
