Expansive 'Berkeley Dance Project' marks 50th anniversary of UC Berkeley’s dance program

UC Berkeley’s Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies presents Berkeley Dance Project 2019: the body remembers, featuring original works by choreographers Joe Goode, Cherie Hill, Rulan Tangen, Latanya Tigner, and UC Berkeley student Katie O’Connor. Berkeley Dance Project (BDP) opens Thursday, Feb. 21 and continues through Saturday, March 2 in Zellerbach Playhouse on the UC Berkeley campus. Tickets are $13–20 and can be purchased online through the TDPS Box Office or at the door.

After graduating from UC Berkeley in 2015, Elissa Lee began studying occupational therapy at USC, and researching chronic care management in medically underserved populations at the Lifestyle Redesign for Chronic Conditions lab. For her work, she was named a Student Innovator by the Gehr Family Center for Health Systems Science.

UC Berkeley's Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies presents Berkeley Dance Project 2020 at 8 p.m. on Feb. 20–22 and Feb. 27–29 in The Playhouse at Zellerbach Hall. Berkeley Dance Project fosters communities during annual showcase

On Saturday, the Berkeley Dance Project staged the third performance of its annual showcase of Bay Area dance talent. The showcase, which took on the theme of community, pulled from a variety of sources, from student dance groups — such as Maya at Cal and the Fei Tian dancers — to campus theater, dance and performance studies, or TDPS, students, alumni and faculty.

I started really dancing in high school. I went to Kennedy High School in Richmond. Dancing gave me an opportunity to be another person who I wasn’t regularly. I’m very shy, but at the club, at the party — it’s a different thing. It allows me to be my authentic self.
