Support TDPS
In TDPS, we have a number of key priorities, and we invite you to articulate yours. Below you will find our description of our special funds as well as a longer “Wish List” that we are always developing.
- Annual Fund – Most donations currently go to our annual fund to support artist residencies, visiting scholars, special workshops/lectures, and professional development coaching for students. The Annual Fund also helps us to support the smaller class sizes necessary to develop artistic and expressive skills in young artists and young thinkers.
- Theater Facility Upgrade Fund - This fund supports the maintenance and upgrading of our theaters, studios, laboratory spaces, and costume and prop storage. It allows us to equip our theaters and smart classrooms with the latest technologies. It supports salaries and professional training for our production and development staff and also helps us to maintain the integrity of our historic buildings, such as Dwinelle Annex and Bancroft Studio.
- David Wood Endowment – The endowment was established to honor David Wood and the dedication with which he and Marni Thomas Wood worked to establish the dance program here at Cal. Income generated from the fund helps to underwrite dance program expenses above and beyond the annual dance budget.
- Ogden Undergraduate and Graduate Funds – Established by emeritus professor Dunbar Ogden, this fund rewards the scholarly achievements of undergraduates and graduate students whose research contributes to our philosophical, historical, and global understanding of performance.
- In-kind kindness – As we host receptions, donor gatherings, student celebrations, and holiday parties throughout the year, we are always grateful for “in-kind” donations of food, drink, or party-hosting.

Wish List
The BIG TICKET items on our wish-list represent substantial donations that will stabilize the future of TDPS and its ability to offer a consistently excellent education and a consistently outstanding performance program for the 21st century.
- Hewlett Chairs in Performance: Currently, TDPS is one of the few departments in the university without an endowed chair. Given the faculty excellence we have in our midst and the signficant programming expenses of our department, endowed chairs that support research and programming will provide foundation for the department and the recognition we feel our faculty deserve. For more information about an endowed chair program sponsored by a very generous donation from the Hewlett Foundation, visit the Hewlett Challenge website.
- Bancroft Studio Naming Opportunity: Bancroft Studio is a gem of a building. A former chapel, it was converted in the 1960s to house a new dance program founded by David and Marni Wood. In addition to the maintenance of this historic building, our hopes are to convert this studio into a performance space for experimental choregraphy and performance.
- Dwinelle Annex Naming Opportunity: Another historic building, this structure designed by John Galen Howard currently houses all faculty offices as well as those of the administrative staff. We hope to rehab the interior of the building as well as its exterior courtyards to create more offices, classrooms, and gathering spaces for the TDPS membership.
- Annual Fund to a Programming Endowment: Our long-term hope is to raise enough funds in the Annual Fund category to create an endowment that will regularly support visiting artists, ambitious residencies, visiting scholars, and other forms of programming that allow us to offer a cutting-edge artistic and intellectual program every year.
