Melpomene Katakalos

Melpomene Katakalos received her MFA in design from UC San Diego and her BFA from Ithaca College, NY. She has been designing scenery in the Bay Area since 1997 for an eclectic mix of companies, including La Jolla Playhouse, ACT Conservatory, California Shakespeare Theater, CenterREP, Magic Theatre, San Francisco Mime Troupe, Cornerstone Theatre in Los Angeles, Marin Theater Company, Aurora Theatre, Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Thick Description, San Francisco Playhouse, A Traveling Jewish Theatre, Word for Word, Foothill Theatre, Napa Valley Repertory Theater, The Cutting Ball, Shotgun Players, Theatre Rhinoceros, and Berkeley Opera. She is also a founding member and artistic associate of Crowded Fire, a San Francisco theatre company dedicated to producing new and contemporary works. Ms. Katakalos has also designed for educational institutions in addition to UC Berkeley, including Stanford University, UC San Diego, and Cornell University where she was also a visiting artist. The East Bay Express named her Best Set Designer in 2008. She is the recipient of the San Diego Playbill Award for her design for the West Coast premiere of Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, directed by Daniel Fish, and for Marat/Sade, directed by Stefan Novinski. She is also the recipient of the SF Guardian’s Best Set Design Award for her design of One Flea Spare for Crowded Fire.
