Professor Peter Glazer retires after 22 years with TDPS

December 19, 2023

Peter Glazer, an associate professor in the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS), has retired from UC Berkeley as of December 2023. During his 22 years with the department, Glazer taught and mentored graduate and undergraduate students, directed more than a dozen stage productions, and served a three-year term as department chair.

"Teaching for TDPS has been the most gratifying and fulfilling work of my life," Glazer said. "From my brilliant and passionate colleagues to the always inspiring Berkeley students, I feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of this department since 2001. I've been able to direct plays by the likes of Caryl Churchill, Mac Wellman, José Rivera, Shakespeare, María Irene Fornés, Christopher Chen, and Howard Barker, and stage three of my own works, one a world premiere. And I have taught classes on subjects including avant-garde theater, adaptation for the stage, commemorative performance, stage directing, and a performance research workshop built on texts from the 1960s—all in all an intellectual and creative journey of remarkable breadth, thanks to the department's mission, values, and vision. I couldn't have asked for more."

Glazer is continuing work on his adaptation of Karen Shepard’s historical novel The Celestials as a guest artist at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. He is a longtime member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), and sits on the Governing Board of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives.
